Vice-chancellor promises to support sports teams

The Vice-chancellor Prof. Laban P. Ayiro has promised to support sportsmen and women across the various Daystar Falcons teams.

The VC spoke recently when he hosted the Daystar Falcons Rugby team to lunch at his official Athi River Campus residence.

During team introductions, the Sports & Recreation Officer Mr. Maurice Masiga appealed for upgrading of sports fields to minimize injuries, a comprehensive medical insurance cover, scholarships and food for the players. 

“I want to buy a branded sports bus strictly designated for university sports activities by 1st September,” said the VC amidst cheers by the Falcons. Additionally, he promised them a retreat in Mombasa before the year ends.

Present at the Luncheon were members of Management including the DVC Academic Research and Students Affairs, Prof. Faith Nguru, the Principal Nairobi Campus Prof. Michael Bowen, Prof. Kehbuma Langmia, a visiting Professor from Howard University, the Director of Resource Mobilization Prof. Bernard Boyo, the Director of Planning and Entrepreneurship Dr. Duncun Irungu, the Dean of Students, Rev. Mutinda Musyimi, the University Chaplain Rev. Steven Nduto, the Corporate Affairs Manager, Mrs. Damaris Kimilu, Sports and Recreation Officer, Mr. Maurice Masiga, University Services Manager Ms. Caroline Mwangi, Falcons Rugby Team Coach Mr. Caleb Bosire, representatives of DU Falcons Rugby , Swimming, Soccer and Chess teams, and staff from Students Affairs department.

The DVC Academic Research and Students Affairs, Prof. Faith Nguru, congratulated the Falcons Rugby team for putting Daystar University on the map in recent matches, and thanked the Dean of Students for ably handling students’ affairs.

Prof. Kehbuma Langmia, a Fullbright Scholar and visiting professor from Howard University challenged the sports men and women not to neglect their studies because of sports.

“Sports should not be an excuse for not making a good GPA. As you hold the mic, we evaluate your academics as well. Do something to be admired both verbally and nonverbally,” he advised.

On her part, the Corporate Affairs Manager Mrs. Damaris Kimilu encouraged the sportsmen and women to apply for the already available scholarships, saying that sports could be their work-study.

“Transformation in Daystar University is real,” said DUSA President Mr Walter Nalwa who cited the Falcons Rugby Coach, Mr Caleb Bosire, as a Daystar Alumnus who was positively impacting the lives of players. 

Mr. Nalwa lauded Caleb Bosire for bringing many students to Daystar University through Beyond the Try scholarship that supports talented Rugby players who are financially challenged.

In his remarks, Mr. Caleb Bosire said the team was going for high battles and needed university support. He also thanked the Vice-chancellor for the lunch and asked that the university considers feeding the players, especially those from less privileged backgrounds. He further thanked the Financial Aid officer, Jennifer Kinoti for her support to the Sports people.

The sportsmen and women were treated to a sumptuous lunch by the Vice-chancellor.
