SSEH and CyberPro Host Exciting Tech Events for Students

[Athi River Campus: July 25, 2025] Students, lecturers and guests of the School of Science, Engineering and Health (SSEH) celebrated three-in-one exciting student events namely: Datathon Presentations, promulgation of the Daystar University School of Science Association (DUSOSA) Constitution, and the CyberPro Graduation.  The events took place at the ICT Theatre, Main Campus Athi River.

In his devotion, the Deputy Chaplaincy, Rev. Josphat Kimacia, set the tone by reminding participants to be responsible and to follow God’s teachings in whatever they do.

In her opening remarks, the Dean, School of Science, Engineering and Health, Prof. Martha Kiarie welcomed everyone and recognized different groups present, including the African Leadership Xcelerator- ALX, CyberPro, DUSA, and African Women in Technology-Afchix.

The Ag. DVC ARSA, Prof. Samuel Muriithi encouraged students to create ideas that can be useful in the market. He gave the example of how China has grown over the last 30 years to become a global economic giant, adding that students should not only innovate but also think about how their ideas can make money.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Patrick Kanyi Wamuyu, strongly advised  IT students that what one can do is more important than what they can say.

Referring to data science as "the new oil", Prof. Kanyi said students need to think critically, solve problems, communicate well, and acquire professional certificates.

Prof. Kanyi also encouraged students to be curious, join IT clubs, and grow their skills.

A panel discussion moderated by Angel Musomba and comprising Ms. Babra Mwithaka from African Women in Technology-Afchix, Wangechi Murimi from Iwazo Lab, and Joseph Juma, an AI researcher, discussed how students can balance good grades and build strong portfolios; the importance of digital skills; and how to prepare for jobs. The panelists also talked about setting goals and building strong networks.

After a short break, the program transited to Daystar University School of Science Association (DUSOSA) Constitution Launch.

Ivy Wabomba, a congress member, said DUSOSA was formed to represent the needs and ideas of students in the School of Science, Engineering and Health, whose goal is to help students grow both academically and professionally.

In her remarks, Prof. Kiarie encouraged students to take part in leadership and professional associations.

The founding committee members comprising Ivy Wabomba, Bryson Kiplimo, Ryanna Kinya, Benjamin Mshindi, Gift Amanya, Ian Kipruto and Faith Muthaka were awarded certificates for their hard work.

The new DUSOSA constitution was signed by Mr. Mutisya Mutie – Chief Legal Advisor, Ms. Ryanna Kinya – Congress Chair, Mr. Jerry Amimo George Ambuche – DUSA Secretary General, Prof. Martha Kiarie – Dean, SSEH, and the Dean of Students, Rev. Mutinda Musyimi.

The final part of the event was the CyberPro Graduation Ceremony.

CyberPro CEO, Mr. Preston Odera thanked Daystar University for the support, learning and growth opportunities it gives its students to. He encouraged the graduands to use their skills to make a difference.

On his part, the Vice President of CyberPro, Mr.  Danstan Akwiri praised the graduands for their hard work. He encouraged them to stay hungry for knowledge and keep learning even after the program.

Later, Prof. Kiarie awarded certificates to 18 students who completed the four-month training program by Cyber-Pro.

The best student, Shana Mudhai, received a special scholarship to study quantum computing in Romania.

The day ended with cutting of a ceremonial cake, followed by a closing prayer offered by Rev. Kimacia.
