On Saturday 19th August, the Vice-chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro raised Ksh 1.7 million over a short evening dinner that attracted 68 guests, among them the Daystar Company Board Chair Rev. Dr. Matthews Mwalw'a.
Prof. Ayiro was the Chief Guest at the Schefers Scholarship Fundraising Dinner organised by the Financial Aid Office under the Finance department and Special Projects Office in the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
Saying that he expected the September 2023 intake to be one of the largest, Prof. Ayiro challenged his guests to disregard their age and give. "Whether you are 17 or 77 years old, it is never too early or too late to give," he appealed.
The Schefers Fund was launched in 2021 through the fundraising efforts of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ayiro and Daystar US Office. It is supported by Mr. and Mrs. Schefers, an elderly couple in Minneapolis, USA, who gave the equivalent of Ksh 100 million from land sale proceeds.
The funds are invested in a revolving Fund in Kenya through which the University supports needy students, particularly postgraduates, through loans.
Also speaking at the dinner, Rev. Dr. Mwalw'a said: "When God calls students to Daystar, He has a plan in store for each one. Some of our students are here because someone they do not know gave."
The purpose of the dinner was to raise funds locally to match the Schefers gift before they can release additional funds.
Other guests present included 37 staff, 11 students, 2 parents, 6 alumni and 5 Friends of Daystar.
