[Friday, 30th May 2025] In a bid to enhance fire safety preparedness and response, the Daystar University Security Department hosted a comprehensive two-day Fire Marshal training on 26th and 27th May at the Main Campus Athi River.
The training, which took place at the ICT Theatre was facilitated by three representatives from Nairobi City County Fire and Rescue Services led by the Deputy Director, Mr. Brian Chunguli.
“This training will not only be useful at Daystar University but will also help us in our homes in case of fire breakout,” said Mr. Chunguli.
The workshop was opened by the Director Main Campus, Dr. Robert Aswani, on behalf of the DVC-FAP Prof Muturi Wachira. Dr. Robert Aswani said the training would help the participants to understand the Do’s and Don’ts when managing fire incidents.
Speaking to the Infospot, the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Chris Wekesa, said the initiative was part of the University’s broader commitment to creating a safe learning and working environment.
Areas of training included: methods of fire extinction, classes of fire, fixed fire equipment installation, basic fire prevention, fire notices procedures, fire alarms, statutory fire requirements, roles of fire marshals, fire reports, Do’s and Don’ts in case of fire, threats from bombs and incendiary devices, and plans of action.
Participants were engaged in groups to do fire safety surveys in different parts of the University, including the Library, cafeteria, hostels, classrooms, offices, School of Nursing and Laboratories, to ensure that the institution complies with fire safety requirements. They also explored evacuation procedures, emergency exits, and the importance of clear fire signage. One of the key takeaways, as emphasized by a facilitator, was the necessity of fire preparedness in every institution in order to minimize loss of life and property.
Together with the Nairobi City County officers, the attendees reviewed plans of action and discussed the importance of fitting and maintaining fire alarms and extinguishers, setting up clearly marked exits, regular fire equipment inspections and upgrades, good maintenance of fire safety equipment, continual fire safety education, and refresher training. The participants were also practically trained on how to use fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers.
“This initiative is part of Daystar University’s broader commitment to creating a safe learning and working environment,” said Mr. Wekesa, revealing that the University plans to roll out more safety and emergency training programs in the coming months so as to foster a culture of safety and preparedness on both campuses.
the training culminated with presentation of certificates to the, participants by the Dean, School of Science Engineering and Health, Prof. Martha Kiarie.
In her remarks, Prof. Kiarie said that the training will enable the participants and the University to manage any fire crisis.
The Fire Marshal Training ended with a fire drill on Friday, 30th May 2025 at Main Campus, Athi River.
