First Vice-chancellor of Daystar University Prof. Stephen Talitwala
For the past two weeks, Daystar University has cerebrated the life of its First Vice-chancellor Prof. Stephen E.J.L. Talitwala, who was promoted to glory on 10th April 2023.
Prof Talitwala has left a legacy of faith through his impactful leadership that touched and transformed many lives.
Prof. Talitwala earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of East Africa (now University of Nairobi) in 1966. In 1967 he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to study at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom where he obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1971.
In spite of his outstanding academic and professional credentials, the distinguished engineer agreed to take up a missionary position as the Executive Director of Daystar Communications, without a salary. The onset of his administrative role was challenging and sacrificial for him and his family, since he had to raise funds to sustain the young institution first, and then get paid if funds were available.
In 1984, Prof. Talitwala became the founding Principal of Daystar University College. With the support of a dedicated team, he launched Daystar’s first undergraduate degree programme which was accredited by Messiah College, in Pennsylvania, USA.
Over the next 10 years, Prof. Talitwala played a pivotal role in leading Daystar’s accreditation. He was part of the Daystar Board that initiated discussions with the then second President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Daniel Arap Moi, to set a policy in motion that would facilitate the accreditation of private universities. For seven years, Prof. Talitwala worked tirelessly to prepare Daystar University College to receive its Charter.
Consequently, on 29th September1994, Daystar University College was awarded a Charter to become Daystar University, the first private inter-denominational Christian university in Kenya. Prof. Talitwala became the founding Vice-Chancellor, a position he held for the next 10 years until 2004.
Prof. Talitwala is remembered by many as a humble, selfless man who deeply loved God. Those who worked with Prof. Talitwala have great memories of how he touched their lives:
In honor of his service to Daystar University, the University will bury Prof. Talitwala at Daystar University’s Heroes’ Corner prepared as a burial place for the University heroes. Prof. Talitwala becomes the first to be buried at the Heroes’ Corner.
Professor is survived by his wife Dr. Mutheu Talitwala, Tibaga Gacheru and Steve G., Joseph Talitwala, Kyesubire and Franklin Greigg. He was grandfather to Nshemerirwe Mimo, Tusubira Kwe, and Mugisa Mbuthia.

"I met Prof Talitwala through his spouse Dr. Mutheu Talitwala. As a student at Makerere University I interacted with his family closely and was a beneficiary of his mentoring and my relationship with the family has continued to date. It was Prof. Talitwala who nudged me into serving Daystar through the Daystar Governing Council as a member. It is his persistence which started my engagement with Daystar University.
Prof. Talitwala was a focused visionary leader who loved the Lord passionately and served with determination and commitment. His service was driven by his faith and belief that God is consistent. His hope and trust that God would accomplish that which he had committed unto him and his love for those he served and served with. His humility, patience, resilience and simplicity were most visible during challenging times. I was privileged to see this in action as he worked with the university council to craft a charter for the first Christian university in Kenya. It was also evident as he dealt with challenging student issues, walking to raise funds or dealing with financial/management challenges that faced the university from time to time. At the family level, Steve loved his family. He also loved his family friends. His laughter was infectious, and he had a good sense of humour."
We thank God for sending our way the gift of Prof. Talitwala’s leadership/service and a demonstration of servant leadership in the way he lived in the public arena and at home.
Dr. Florence Muli-Musiime (2nd Chancellor of Daystar University).
